Faces

What is Pikey Perch Face? I hear you cry. When travelling with certain friends it has been a great source of amusement to pull a face for the camera, and it can also be non-deliberate. This has gone on for years with some notable classics. The best being when the unsuspecting photographer does not realise his pride and joy is to be ruined by some miscreant pulling a face.

But where does the phrase come for? For years the activity went on, but with no name until a backpacking holiday in Bulgaria in 2009. As is the norm abroad restaurants have a local language selection and an English version, with the translation into English usually containing some absolute gems.

In Bulgaria they eat river fish, and one particular type of fish (never did find out what it is) was translated as Pikey Perch and did seem to have a  look about it when presented on a plate – but then again I would not be too amused if pulled from a river, grilled, and eaten. Hence the name.
